LWVAL TAKE ACTION TUESDAY

Tuesday January 13, 2026

The 2026 Alabama Legislative Session begins today! And Take Action Tuesdays are back!

You may not be the type to make New Year’s resolutions, but the LWVAL is asking you to make one today.

We believe our power as citizens is partially realized when we make an effort to be informed.  We believe our power as citizens is fully realized when we are informed AND take action.

Take Action Tuesdays is a weekly communication to League members and friends highlighting priority issues coming up in the Legislature that particular week. It is sent the first thing Tuesday mornings because that is when the Legislators return and start their work for the week.

Take Action Tuesday’s commitment to you is that we will:

  1. Present to you 3-5 actions each Tuesday morning during the session.

  2. Keep the actions brief (typically only 5-10 minutes to complete).

  3. Supply supplemental information for those who want to dig a little deeper.

It’s an election year so the session will be shorter.  This means there will be more theatrics and the bad stuff has the potential of happening even faster.  It’s going to be important to stay focused and ‘in the game.'

Our ask?  That you resolve with all of us to open these emails on Tuesday mornings and do your best to TAKE ACTION!

And with that intro, let's get started!

ACTION 1 UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS

Review the ‘Alabama Legislative Process’ found on the State of Alabama's website.

We are always better equipped to engage in a system when we understand how it works.  The ‘Alabama Legislative Process’ document found at the link below was written in 1963 and updated by legislators every year.  It is remarkably informative and easy to read.

ACTION 2 - Watch the Process

Visit the Alabama Channel and learn how you can watch the process LIVE or anytime at your convenience.

Click below to visit the Alabama Channel, a government transparency project of the League of Women Voters of Alabama Education Fund.  The Alabama Channel is a video resource library where Alabamians can view live, recorded and indexed videos of Alabama legislative session and committee meetings.

ACTION 3 - FOLLOW THE PROCESS

Review how to navigate ‘ALISON’, the official website of the Alabama Legislature

ALISON is the 'Alabama Legislative Information System Online’.  It contains a wealth of information about bills including sponsors, history, amendments and status. Click below to visit ALISON and familiarize yourself with the types of information there.

ACTION 4

Join with the LWVAL and Read Freely Alabama in Opposing SB26

Protect Independent Library Boards in Alabama

SB26 (2026) weakens the independence of Alabama’s public library boards, strips local boards of stability by making every member “serve at the pleasure” of their appointing authority, and requires every library board in the state to file annual book removal reports directly to the Governor, Speaker of the House, and Senate Pro Tem detailing every action related to reviewing or removing materials. This creates a coercive reporting system that invites political interference in local collection decisions.

Together, these changes undermine good governance, erode local control, and make libraries more vulnerable to state-driven censorship efforts. Alabama’s libraries belong to their communities, not to political actors in Montgomery.

Click HERE to contact your State Senator, urge them to oppose SB26, and protect independent, community-led libraries in Alabama.
