TWO URGENT ACTION CALLS BY THE ALABAMA RIVERS ALLIANCE
#1 - OPPOSE SB71
This bill prohibits Alabama from adopting environmental protection criteria stricter than federal requirements.
SB71 will take away Alabama's ability to enact laws more protective of our water quality than federal minimums. It passed the Senate last week, was voted out of the House committee Friday (after a 30 minute hearing) and now is expected to hit the House floor early this week.
Alabama Rivers Alliance (and MANY Alabamians) believe it is Alabama regulators who should be making the decisions about our state's beloved natural resources - not the federal government. The bill is currently sailing through the legislature like it's tied to a hurricane, which is curious given Alabama's deep commitment to state's rights.

#2 - OPPOSE HB392 and SB268
Allows for appointment of PSC members rather than election.
HB392 and SB268 would take the power to elect members of the Alabama Public Service Commission out of voters' hands and put it into the hands of the Governor and legislative leaders. This has been marketed as a way to protect the PSC from political influence, but nothing could be further from the truth. As it stands, regulated utilities cannot contribute to Public Service Commission campaigns. If this bill passes, legislators who receive donations from regulated utilities will be the ones making the choices about who sets utility rates, not Alabama’s voters.
Additionally, HB392/SB268 are titled 'Alabama Affordability Plan'. These bills do NOTHING for affordability. Alabama already has some of the highest electric bills in the nation, yet these bills contain no provisions to lower rates, limit profits, or protect customers. If voters lose the ability to hold commissioners accountable, how are customers supposed to demand lower bills?

The Save Act
Requires proof of citizenship to register to vote.
Congress continues to introduce bills that would require voters to present documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to register and/or vote. In the 119th Congress, three major pieces of legislation have been introduced to require DPOC to vote, including:
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which passed the House in 2025 and would require citizenship documentation to register to vote, and, more recently
The SAVE America Act and the Make Elections Great Again Act, which have even stricter components than the SAVE Act, like requirements for voters to present DPOC both at registration and the polls, and for absentee ballots to be received by election day.
Collectively, the LWVUS is referring to these pieces of legislation as the “SAVE Act suite of bills.”
It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. Requiring documentary proof of American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and seeks to divide us. It simply creates another barrier to voting. ACTION REQUESTED: Use the LWVUS form to communicate your strong opposition to the SAVE Act. Read the information on this page and take note of the many bad points about these bills.
