LWVAL ACTION CALL

Urge Alabama Public Television (APT) NOT to Sever Ties with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)

November 7, 2025

The Alabama Public Television (APT) Board is currently  considering whether to cut ties with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) - which represents 90% of its programming.  Created in 1953 as the Alabama Educational Television Commission, APT was the nation's first public television network.  If the Board votes to cut ties, APT would be the first educational network in the country to disaffiliate from PBS.

It is believed that a vote on whether to maintain existing PBS programming will occur at the APT Board meeting in Birmingham on November 18.
