The Fight for the Ballot Box:

Voting Rights in the Deep South

Tuesday, November 18, 2025

6 pm CT | 7 pm ET; Offered Virtually Via Zoom

The right to vote is often called the cornerstone of our democracy—the fundamental power through which all other rights are protected. Yet, in the Deep South, this right has been a constant battleground. From the era of Jim Crow to the present day, the ballot box has been the target of policies and practices designed to limit access and silence certain voices.

In this section of our Good Trouble series, we're examining the modern fight for voting rights. We'll explore the sophisticated methods of voter suppression that have replaced poll taxes and literacy tests, from restrictive voter ID laws and purges of voter rolls to the closure of polling places and the disenfranchisement of formerly incarcerated citizens. Who is being targeted by these measures, and how does this fight shape the political landscape of the South?

Let's get into some good trouble and discuss the ongoing struggle for the soul of Southern democracy.
