The Alabama Channel is a project of the League of Women Voters of Alabama Education Fund. It is a video resource library for Alabamians to view live, recorded and indexed footage of Alabama's Legislative meetings.
Mission: The mission of the Alabama Channel is to facilitate civic engagement and enhance public awareness of Alabama's state government by delivering easily accesible and searchable video content capturing the essence of the state's Legislative meetings. Through our platform, we aim to promote transparency, encourage active participation, and empower individuals to be informed and engaged citizens in shaping Alabama's governance.
Alabama's current legislative live-streams meetings, but does not record them for later viewing. The LWVAL and the Alabama Channel believes every citizen should have access to not only live but recorded footage of legislative meetings. An important compontent of The Alabama Channel is the ability to quickly and easily search through meeting footage to locate bills or issues of importance to viewers.
The Essential Role of the Alabama Channel in Legislative Transparency and Public Engagement

Alabama's legislature restricts meetings to live-streaming without recording, underscoring the need for The Alabama Channel. Alabama is one of only four states where legislative meeting recordings were not archived until now, and not all meetings are live-streamed, emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive coverage.
The Alabama Channel fills this gap by providing a platform for storing and accessing these meetings. Through re-livestreaming, archiving, and robust search functionality, users can pinpoint key moments, making The Alabama Channel an essential tool.

The Alabama Channel also counters the decline in local newspapers and journalistic staff by offering comprehensive, accessible coverage of legislative meetings. As the number of local journalists decreases due to economic challenges, The Alabama Channel ensures detailed records are available, supporting in-depth reporting on legislative decisions and their local impacts. It serves as an educational resource for future journalists and fosters community engagement by making government actions transparent and accessible.
