***  Call to Action ***
Please ask your Alabama legislators to
support SB231 and HB268
to help
restore voting rights to many!

Please contact your Alabama legislators (Senate and House) immediately and encourage them to vote YES ON SB231 AND HB268.

PLEASE ACT NOW. THESE BILLS COULD BE VOTED ON THIS WEEK!

You can find email and telephone
contact information for your legislators here:
http://capwiz.com/state-al/home/

Please email or make the call in your own name, not in the name of the League of Women Voters. Ask your Senator to support SB231 (sponsored by Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster). Ask your Representative to support HB268 (sponsored by Rep. Mike Jones, R-Andalusia). Let them know that you are a constituent and that you are watching!

The effect of these bills is well summarized by Alabama Arise, saying that "[SB231 AND HB268] would clarify which crimes would permanently disqualify someone from voting in Alabama, and how someone could apply to get their rights restored promptly after they’ve served their sentence."  This legislation will help help reduce the confusion that now exists about the restitution process. Democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens including those who have paid their debt to society.

These bills and others concerning "Voting Access and Processes" can be followed in the LWVAL 2016 Legislative Report at:
http://www.lwval.org/takeaction/legreport2016/page305/
Bill sponsors, bill summary, complete bill text, current status of the legislation, LWVAL's position on the legislation, and LWVAL's action are included for each bill. The report is updated weekly.

Please contact your state legislators immediately so that this problem gets resolved!

Thank you!
