For the first time in our memory, our league will not be purchasing “I Have Voted” stickers for elections. This year the county put the cost in their budget and plans to continue furnishing them in the future. We are donating the ones we have on hand for the coming primary….
Many thanks to all the officers and board members for their work this year. See you next Wednesday.

State Council ReportThe program at State Council was really outstanding. Mary Lynn Bates, an attorney on State Board gave a concise and very clear presentation of the pros and cons of judge selection – both elected and appointed. The best system, to this reporter, seemed to be appointment, followed by a retention election at the end of the first term……..Workshops included a report on the problems still lingering from Katrina, and plans for the coming season. especially impact on our coastal wetlands…A panel, including. Auburn Professor Christa Slaton, Adam Bourne from Nancy Worley’s office, and Lee County Probate Judge Bill English, reviewed requirements for changes in election processes and equipment, including the need for an updated statewide voter list which can be approved under the new voting act, HAVA.
In the business session, Facts and Issues on the Legislative study were passed out to all the local league representatives. Additional copies can be ordered from Ruth Wright in Auburn. Since the study finished in an off-year, the distribution of the League’s new position to members of the Legislature and the general public will be held until fall.
Outgoing president Becky Sylvester was thanked for her service to League and incoming President of the League of Women Voters of Alabama, Sandy Robinson of Auburn was welcomed.
