If you have special interests in a state-wide issue or issues, we would love to hear about them. (Here's where the LWVAL stands, and here are our LWVAL Advocacy Priorities for 2008.) Your opinions and suggestions for League advocacy are welcomed here, too.

Should LWVAL share your information with your local League?

Because of the lack of home rule in our Alabama Constitution, many bills regarding local issues are introduced into the state legislature. We hope you will give LWVAL permission to pass the information in this survey on to your local League to help plan for local legislation advocacy. However, we will not do this without your permission.
Do share this information with my local League.

Do NOT share this information with my local League.

About your privacy and other questions you may have...
This information is for LWVAL Advocacy use only. The Advocacy Team (members of the LWVAL Board of Directors and LWVAL Legislative Liaison) may request that you contact a legislator to advocate in your own name for or against a bill. Your personal information will not be shared in any way with anyone else, including other members of the League, without your expressed direction. You may direct LWVAL to share this information with your local League to advocate for or against local legislation (one of the survey questions). However, unless otherwise directed by you, LWVAL will not share your information with your local League.

Questions you may have...

What difference do I make to the advocacy effort?
As a member of the League of Women Voters, you are an integral part of the League's advocacy effort in the Alabama Legislature. When a bill reaches a critical stage in the legislature, the LWVAL Advocacy Team will issue a call to action urging smember to contact their legislators. You will be asked to urge your legislator to vote favorable to our League position on the issue. Your action is important.

Why is my help so important?  If you are a constituent, your voice is extremely powerful in influencing your legislator's vote. The law-maker knows that for every call, letter, or email he/she receives, there are probably hundreds of constituents who have a similar opinion. The League writes letters to the legislators and letters to the editor and presents testimony at the State House; the legislators knows the League's opinion. BUT your personal voice is the strongest of all!

Why do you need to know specifically who my legislators are?  Sometimes the most effective advocacy is not through a general call to action, but with a targeted call to action urging contact with certain committee members or legislative leaders. A key to effective advocacy is knowing where our advocacy strengths are. For certain bills that will be you!!

Can't you find out who my legislators are for yourself?  Yes, but it takes time and resources that we could use for other worthy League efforts! :-) Your help would be appreciated!  THANK YOU!
